Waking up without Bannock next to me the next morning was startling, but he’d left a note on the dresser to let me know that he’d gone out flying. I showered, brushed my teeth with an extra toothbrush I'd found and completed the rest of my morning routine in his absence, only this time there would be no clothes to put on.
There was something illicit and exotic about walking around Bannock’s house naked. The blinds were closed and the curtains were drawn, so I had nothing to fear from nosy neighbors possibly getting a peek at me. I made his bed—our bed, I reminded myself—while naked. And I started the laundry that way, as well. I cleaned up the evidence of our lovemaking from the night before and I made tea. By the time Bannock returned from his flight, I was in the library with my head bent over a book about candle-making, with a cup of tea in front of me.
I hadn’t heard him come in, so when he kissed the back of my neck, it was a surprise to me. But I wasn’t startled by his sudden presence as I turned to smile up at him. “Good morning. May I make you some tea?”
He nodded. “I would like that. Thank you.”
I hurried along to brew him tea and was pleased that he came with me. Surely he had better things to do than to watch me prepare a cup of tea for him.
“Did you have a good morning?” he asked me.
I smiled at him. “I did. Thank you for leaving your note so that I wouldn’t get worried when I woke up without you. How was your flight?”
“A little cold,” he said. I willed the water for his tea to warm up faster. “But I like flying before the sun rises and the skies begin to fill up with all the other shifters in the area. Being a dragon, I’m easily the biggest one out there. It isn’t a problem when there are just a few of us flying around at a time but too many and I fear that I’ll accidentally knock someone to the ground.”
“It is my opinion,” I said as I placed his tea on the counter in front of him, “that those fae that are smaller than you should be far more aware of where you are, not the other way around. You can’t be expected to watch out for every sprite that happens to cross your path up there.”
He laughed and I loved that sound. “I wish everyone saw things as you do. I stopped by a clothing store in the city this morning. It was one of the few places that was open so early. You have a few presents on the bed, for when you’re ready to get dressed to go meet your parents and get what you need from the capital for yourself.”
I smiled up at him. “You didn’t have to. I could have worn my clothes from yesterday until more appropriate things could be acquired.
